Away from home

SPUN-OFF! Headland, E4, 7.30pm.

HeadlandSoap spinoffs are notoriously tricky things. Everyone remembers Damon and Debbie, right? Hello? And everybody's been blown away by the quality of the various spinoffs of Hollyoaks, too - remember Movin' On? With such quality dialogue as "Are you coming, Ruth?" "No, it's just the way I'm standing."

This one doesn't seem to be a spinoff in the traditional sense, in that it's relying on being "from the makers of" Home and Away rather than taking a couple of the characters and spinning the story around them, which we gather was the plan originally before various political stuff meant that had to change. We're writing this without the benefit of an internet connection so we can't really do much research. What we have gleaned from a quick glance of the Radio Times is that it centers around a young bloke (whom we hope is fit, but we can't say) returning home and taking a job at the local university, and a car crash sends the community into turmoil.

We've got no idea if it's any good (although we've since learned from Wikipedia that it got axed in Australia after the initially good ratings tanked quite soon afterwards, so we're guessing it's hardly brilliant), but it makes a nice little bookend for the first-run of Hollyoaks and creates a lovely little soap zone between 7 and 8pm, which is nice for anyone who isn't keen on all the other soaps on all the other channels at that time.

About Us

According to Marxist theory, cultural forms such as opera, classical music and the literary works of Shakespeare all fall under the heading of high culture. Low culture refers to a wide variety of cultural themes that are characterised by their consumption by the masses. We might not be Marxists, but we do know we loved Footballers Wives. If you do too, you'll know what this is all about.
